Plastic Milk Science experiment aka Milk into stone

What you need:
  • Milk
  • White vinegar
  • Strainer

Step 1: Get 1 warm cup of full cream milk, to achieve this you can either heat it up in the microwave or pour some milk into a saucepan and place the saucepan on a hotplate/stove.

Step 2: Get a tablespoon (5 ml) of vinegar and add the vinegar to one cup of milk.  (1 cup: 1 tablespoon-ratio).

Step 3: Now stir at it. Now chunks of white stuff should appear. This substance is called casein.

Step 4: Now pour all of it through a strainer. Try to get rid of all the liquid so it's just casein.

Step 5: Now you can mould it if you like into the shape you want. Dry it in a container once you've moulded the casein. (I put mine in a strawberry container because birds seem to love eating it)

Plastic Milk Science Experiment Steps

Hints and tips
  • Put casein on a paper towel to soak up the remaining liquid for step 4.
  • The drier the better.
Make it an experiment
The "experiment" above is actually a demonstration. To make it a real experiment try to answer questions you have by tests and doing your own experiments.
  1. Would this work with different vinegars
  2. Will this work with almond milk or skim milk
  3. What happens if you don't heat the milk in step
