Why is ice slippery?

We've done a lot in science yet we are still guessing why ice is slippery. Here are scientists best guesses!

Physicists once believed that ice became slippery when pressure was applied. they thought that pressure caused the top layer of ice to melt when say a skating blade passed over it then froze again once the blade had passed.

You probably noticed the once believed part above. So here is what scientists and physicists have come up with now. They found that pressure does have a impact though it is minuscule compared to the friction of say a blade passing above the ice. Yet scientists have another theory that ice naturally contains a layer comprised of unstable water molecules. While these molecules go everywhere searching for somewhere stable they create a slippery layer.

Which theory do you think is correct? Hope you enjoyed this weeks post and we can't wait to see you in the next one!
