Love Gaming but your mum won't let you? Here are some great points to convince her to let you game!

Action gamers make decisions 25% faster than non-action gamers. Yep, that's right! Now you can convince Mum to let you play 'Call of Duty'! In one study they got two groups to play an action-packed game - 'Call of Duty 2', while the other group played a simulator game - 'Sims 2'. This study showed that people who played 'Call of Duty' made decisions 25% faster even in tasks non-related to video games.

Mum telling you it ruins your eyes? Think again! A study from University of Rochester led by Daphne Bavelier has shown that it increases our sensitivity to see different shades of colours this was particularly with first person shooters. The increases were 58% according to the researchers!

Now driving game lovers, this study is for you.
Driving games help improve memory, focus and multi-tasking ability. This study was on 60 to 85 year olds, though you can still use this point in your debate to play video games.

Now you might think video games make you lazy and not do exercise; though today I'm proud to tell you video games encourage exercise. Kids who play sport games, for example 'FIFA 15', are more likely to go out and play that sport outside.

RPGs (Role Playing Games) such as the 'Witcher 3: Wild Hunt' and 'Skyrim', showed they're linked to better problem solving skills and, wait for it... BETTER GRADES. The "better grades" study is a real parent winner!

Some other great benefits include:
  • Video games can help burn victims manage their pain.
  • VR (Virtual Reality) helps people overcome their fears and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).
  • Cancer patients who play video games have a more positive outlook.
  • People who play video games have more control of their dreams.
  • Children with dyslexia had a better ability to read after playing video games.

So grab a controller and start gaming!

Don't have a console? Don't fret! Below, are some great console deals from Amazon!

Great post. Very interesting ideas. I know of at least one other benefit. Call of Duty is based on actual battlefield terrain (except for the Nazi Zombie option). One high school student who had played unquantifiable hours of CoD understood the history and the battle of Normandy landings in WWII from a unique perspective when visiting on a history excursion. The landings (aka D-Day) had their 71st anniversary on 6 June on a history excursion. The student said he had many times traversed that terrain and climbed certain hills while trying to assault the German pillbox. So virtual history understanding is another benefit. Looking forward to your other posts.
P.S. Lydia Plowman (Edinburgh academic) has published 'Six questions parents ask ...' about their children's media and gaming use. Very readable overview of the research. You or your readers might be interested.
