How do christmas cracker work
The "BANG" is simply caused with some friction and a little bit of chemistry...

Under the bright wrapping is the cardboard tube and in that tube are... two cardboard strips. Now for the interesting part!

 On one strip there is a tiny amount of a chemical compound called silver fulminate - AgCNO (This is made by reacting concentrated nitric acid with silver and ethanol) Silver fulminate is very sensitive and will even explode under it's own weight in large quantities!
